Sheet piles designs and failed dock PAL3260 and PAL3270 wall conditions. Adjacent contaminated site soil migrates through failed dock walls; All footings must extend at least 12” into undisturbed natural soil or compacted fill which has been compacted to at least 90% density. Quay walls are earth retaining structures at which ships can PAL3260 berth. potential recontamination if not properly contained prior to remediation. Sediments below dock walls have typically not been characterized. Adjacent PAL 3290 land is often privately owned and dock wall repairs are cost prohibitive. Unknown future land use complicates overall project design.

Steel sheet pile like PAL3280 or PAL3290 are equipped with bollards and fenders, and they are used for the handling of goods by cranes and other equipment moving alongside the ship. Soil should be dampened prior to placing concrete footings. A soils report, compiled by a licensed engineer, may be required. Footing PAL 3280 sizes given in this handout are based on 1000 psf maximum soil bearing PAL370 value; use of different bearing values will require design by a licensed architect, civil or structural engineer specifically for the PAL 3270 existing conditions and may also require a soils report. Multi-agency permitting, approvals, and consultations. Historic preservation of dock walls may PAL 3260 limit repair options and complicate project timing. Coordination of dredged materials and USACE hired dredging contractor. Pre-project testing of dredge materials may be insufficient. PAL3280 contaminated sediment containment and/or disposal during remediation. Conflicting property interests due to multiple property owners In ancient times ship landing had been restricted to natural bays in which PAL3290 ships were drawn to the dry. At places where ships could moor villages and towns grew up. Mooring places grew into PAL3290 quays and developed into ports and trading places.

Assess the condition and design of the PAL 3260 terrestrial and water portions of the dock walls Characterize sediment contours and contamination below dock walls Perform comprehensive feasibility study, identify alternatives, and prepare cost estimates Obtain agency permits and perform consultations (RAPs, EAW, Section 106, etc.) Early types of quays were gravity walls, their retaining PAL3280 function is obtained by the self weight of the structure. Gravity walls have been constructed from stone blocks, since the first century BC already from concrete. Secure funding, PAL 3270 capping material, and establish remediation credits Execute a project partnership agreement between land owners and agencies Design the remediation.

Steel sheet piling PAL 3260 and PAL 3270 must be deformed and comply with ASTM specification A615-85, Grade 40 or 60. When one continuous bar cannot be used, a lap or splice of 40 bar diameters is required. Two #3 bars, minimum, must be placed longitudinally in the footing. For 6” and 8” blocks one #3 bar must be placed longitudinally in the center of the wall in a mortar joint every PAL3270 as blocks are laid up. The sheet pile wall then is a cantilever beam elastically fixed in the ground. With increasing height the deflections at the top become to PAL 3280 large so that the top needs to be anchored. For 12” blocks one #4 bar must be placed longitudinally in the center of the wall in a bond beam block course every 16” as blocks are laid up. XI. USE OF TABLES - EXAMPLE Specify the height of the wall required for site conditions and the PAL 3290 slope of the retained earth. Using Table A for appropriate wall height and slope of retained earth, determine T, R, K, and W designations.

Especially at coast lines with weak soils PAL 3280 and PAL 3290 walls have been developed. They get their soil retaining function and stability from the fixation capacity of the soil. Once more the fixation capacity of the PAL3260 soil is the stabilization element for the anchors.
