Sheet Pile Installation Methods

The installation of sheet pile is a specialist activity, calling for considerable knowledge and experience of handling sheet piles and operating hammers to achieve an acceptable placement within specified tolerances of position and level.

Guidance on the practical limits that can be achieved in position and level for driven steel sheet piles is available from the FPS (Federation of Piling Specialists) and in the TESPA (Technical European Sheet Piling Association) publication Installation of steel sheet. Guidance is also included at the back of the ICE Specification for piling and embedded retaining walls.

The designer should refer to these documents before carrying out a design, because the advice given will often affect the details at connections to the sheet pile cap in the structure.

There is much to gain from matching the stiffness of the sheet pile to the hammer and to the anticipated soil resistance at the site to achieve satisfactory driveability and to ensure achievement of the required design penetration.

The same installation methods as for sheet piles described above can be used for sheet piles.

Why use sheet piles?

Most areas on site are not particularly sensitive to lowering ground water levels. The excavation in these areas

will be retained with horizontal timber poles lodged between steel posts (referred to as king posts).

The ground between the Carillon and the Tasman Gardens Apartments is sensitive to settlement through loss of ground

water pressure, so in this area sheet piles will be used. Interlocking steel sheets (sheet piles) form a barrier to ground water loss. The sheet piles will be installed prior to excavation for construction of the underpass.

What is sheet pile?

The term sheet pile refers to any retaining wall type that is a) installed into the ground by driving or pushing, rather than pouring or injection, and b) is of relatively thin cross-section and low weight so that the weight of the wall does not assist in the wall’s stability.

The modern sheet pile industry is a little more than 100 years old with perhaps the most important changes in type and selection of products occurring since the early 1970’s. Sheet pile have been used in a wide variety of applications, especially marine bulkheads and retaining walls where space is limited. In addition to these, a special type of retaining wall is the cellular cofferdam, which are used extensively for both temporary and permanent structures.

Sheet pile are made in a number of materials. The material chosen depends upon a number of factors including both strength and environmental requirements. The designer must consider the possibility of material deterioration and its effect on the structural integrity of the system. Most permanent structures are constructed of steel or concrete. Concrete is capable of providing a long service life under normal circumstances but has relatively high initial costs when compared to steel sheet piling. They are more difficult to install than steel piling. Long-term field observations indicate that steel sheet piling provides a long service life when properly designed. Permanent installations should allow for subsequent installation of cathodic protection before excessive corrosion occurs.
