Sheet Pile Corrosion Protection

To enhance the durability of sheet piles and hence to increase the success of your project, two forms of corrosion protection are available: Coating and hot-dip galvanizing.

Coatings

The choice of coating system depends on the expected stressing and the required service life. To cope with the severe stressing to which sheet piling is usually exposed, epoxy resin or polyurethane coatings are applied in most cases. They are also compatible with the HOESCH interlock seal system.

The high strength of these systems permits complete coating in the factory because, if correctly handled, no damage during transport or installation is to be expected. A factory coating is also advisable for environmental reasons, as this eliminates problems associated with grinding dust and overspray on the project site. To prevent rust stains on the coated sections, any existing interlock gaps must be grouted on site.

The coating of section interlocks filled with bitumen-based materials is not recommended, as during threading some of the material will be squeezed out of the interlock chamber and soil the wall of sheet piling. Subsequent cleaning of these areas is complicated and expensive.

Hot dip galvanising

Hot-dip galvanizing is another method of corrosion protection and is also compatible with the HOESCH interlock seal system. It can also be combined with coatings (duplex system) to yield synergies. The requirements of DIN EN ISO1461 must be observed. Before hot-dip galvanizing, a steel analysis must be carried out in order to determine the surface quality. Special marking is also necessary. Notice should therefore be given of the intention to have the piles hot-dip galvanized before the start of rolling. Like coating, hot-dip galvanizing is not recommended if the interlock has been filled with bitumen-based materials.

Combined wall steel sheet piling

Combined wall systems are used when regular sheet piles are not strong enough to carry the required loads. The two main components of a combined wall system are the king pile (Painer PSp profile or Pipe) and a pair or tripple of intermediary sheet piles. The connector is the third component and it can be welded to or interlocked with the king pile and connects the king pile to the sheet pile. The intermediary sheet piles transfer the soil and water pressures to the king piles, which carry most of the load. The sheet piles are usually shorter, varying from 60% to 100% of the length of the king pile. The king piles are often designed to carry substantial vertical loads in addition to the normal bending loads.

ESP Composite Sheet Piles

U Type Sheet Piling

Cold-rolled U Type Sheet Piling is a new technology exsited in late 20th century. Compared to old-fashioned Larssen Sheet Piles, the cold-rolled U sheet piles have got the following advantages:

1. Providing equivalent or better section properties (modulus) with lower material cost, which means the unit weight per square meter is lower than larssen sheet piles. This will help save material cost and as result save project cost.

2. Wider than larssen sheet piles. Less quantity or pieces of sheet piles would be needed, which will speed up the installation process. This will help save project time and as a result help save machine and labor cost.

3. Uniform thickness. Compared to Larssen sheet piles, of which the thinnest part at the interlock part is only around 6.5mm, uniform thickness makes it much more stable during installation and it won’t be easily damaged during installation.

U Type Sheet Piling normally would be delivered in single pile, and somtimes will be delivered in box pile form as per the project design. The height of the U Type Sheet Piling is always the height of combined pile (double pile).

The History of Sheet Piles

Let’s start with Larssen sheet piles. Larssen set of sheet piles are famous and well known to civil engineers worldwide. Their reliability, versatility and strength in all types of condition as retaining structures has beenwell proven and documented many times over.

Here is a little bit of history of this famous sheet pile. In 1902, Mr Tryggve Larssen, State Chief Engineer at the City of Bremen in Germany, developed the world’s first steel sheet pile, which has U section with riveted interlocks. Thus this how the name of this sheet pile comes about.

The interlocking idea on both sides of the sheet pile came about In 1914. This is still utilized all over the world as the most popularsteel sheet pile section.

One of the oldest Larssen U pile is displayed at Giken Kochi Head Office to remind us of the historical background of U steel sheet pile. The picture below is a typical larssen sheet piles stacked together.

The interlocking system mentioned above can be seen from the photo on the left. On both the sides of the sheet piles have U shapes which can be used to interlock to another sheet pile.

The interlocking system creates a water tight and increase the strength the sheet pile structures. Be it cofferdams or earth retaining systems.

Discover the Value of Vinyl Sheet Piling

Traditionally when it comes to installing sheet piling around a bridge pier or along an embankment we think of steel sheet piling.  Steel sheet piling are the most common, and have been one of the most effective methods of installing a deep foundation.  They have a long history of providing a robust barrier through shaped, interlocking sheets that can last for 75+ years.

On the other hand, when deep foundations are not required we search for solutions such as concrete retaining walls, soldier pile walls, or even concrete consolidation of historical masonry walls.  These solutions are a cost effective approach, however longevity can be sacrificed.

There is another solution that combines the strength of a sheet pile wall, the value of a concrete retaining wall, and modern-day technologies.  This involves the use of vinyl sheet piling.  Vinyl sheet piling comes in similar shapes and sizes as steel sheet piling, however it is made from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) so it resists degradation common in concrete walls.

Vinyl sheet piling can be used in several applications; however one of the most effective applications that we at Brennan have found is its use in concrete structure reinforcement.  In this application it is effectively used as a leave-in-place formwork that helps protect newly placed concrete in above and below-water repairs.  Vinyl sheet piling can be placed without the use of heavy equipment around an existing structure such as a bridge pier.  It is secured in place using a steel waler system and rebar.  The toe of the sheeting can be secured using grout bags.

Once secured, the concrete can then be placed using traditional methods, or as preplaced aggregate concrete (PAC).  The pressurization of installing the grout in the PAC method will consolidate the existing structure, increasing its strength.

The result is an aesthetically pleasing repair that combines long-lasting surface protection, with effective strengthening of the existing structure.  This method is cost effective and will last longer than traditional concrete retaining walls.

Cold formed U shaped steel sheet pile

Cold rolled sheet pile or cold formed sheet pile are produced in this way: Steel plates go through various roller to form shapes, in most sheet piling factory, the interlocks should be formed at first, then other profiles. The whole rolling process is done at normal temperatures, cold water will be poured at the sheet piling machines to cool down. The cold rolling process increases the yield strength and hardness of steel. Previously sheet piles were only light gauge profiles, but gradually as technology develops, now the thickest cold rolled sheet piling is 16mm. Width can be over 1500mm. Cold rolled sheet piles are lighter and easier to transport and delivery.

U shaped steel sheet pile have been driven and installed throughout the world for many years. Sheet pile can be supplied in single pile, double piles or even triple piles. Steel sheet pile contractors choose U profiles mainly because the interlocks are located on the neutral axis.

1. U Profile steel sheet pile are traditional sheet piles, especially in Aisa, like Korea sheet pile and Japan sheet pile. Cold formed sheet pile can be used in anywhere, like cofferdam, river bank protection, deep foundations, land reclamation etc.

Weep holes for sheet piling (PVC pipe with perforation and Geotextile sheet)

The sheet pile construction method has been increasingly utilized for water channel revetment, in the soft ground area. However , Weep holes and drain pipes used for this method have not yet been popularly used.

WEEP HOLE, drainage pipe with flap valve , consists of PVC pipe and socket with rubber valve. The ground water drain through the weep hole and out to the channel. When the water level in the channel is higher than the level of drainage hole , rubber flap valve of weep hole doesn’t allow the water inside channel to go back through the darainage pipe.

Advantage:

♦ Ground water from back side of concrete wall goes out to the channel through pipe.

♦ Rubber flap valve does not allow the water to flow back into drainage pipe.
